Jubilee and the Dukes

Sunset over the Dukes

"It is easy to understand why visitors to St. Andrews all want to play the Old Course but you ignore the merits of the Jubilee Course at your own expense. It is a superb links course and arguably the toughest in St. Andrews."
"An excellent golf course in its own right, the Dukes Course is ideal for those wanting a break from the demands of links golf. But don't expect an easy ride. The par 72 layout measures over 6,700 yards from the normal medal tees and is a stiff test. "

The jubilee in question was that of Queen Victoria. Following substantial re-design by Donald Steel, the course is regarded by many St Andreans as the toughest test in town. And that includes the Old. The course is built on the North East side of the links land and closer to the sea than the New and the Old. To succeed on the Jubilee, you should hit the ball long and straight, never forgetting that deep rough and whin bushes do not give up their captives willingly.

The layout was radically altered from 1939 to 1946 under the supervision of 1893 Open Champion, Willie Auchterlonie, while further changes made by Donald Steel in 1988. In its present format, Curtis Strange officially opened the course in 1989 and it has since hosted many major events, including the Scottish Amateur Strokeplay Championship in 1993 and 1999.

The Duke's Course was designed by five times Open Champion Peter Thomson and is St Andrew's only Parkland course. It is a substantial challenge, measuring 7271 yards from the back tees, but if the Championship Course is too much for you, play the forward tees and enjoy some stunning views of the old town and St Andrews Bay.

Beautifully sculpted holes exploit the natural features of the stunning parkland setting and the course lends itself ideally to the pitch and run game.
